Let's be honest: from the outside, the Hilton is quite appallingly ugly. What was the Stockholm planning board thinking? Having said that, when you are inside the building looking out, it is a far more pleasant experience. For one thing, the hotel has glorious views over Riddarfjärden towards Gamla Stan.

All the bedrooms are smartly furnished and the suites are a treat: spacious, airy, with modern furniture and marble bathrooms. The distinctive use of light and dark striped wood in the corridors and bedrooms gives the hotel a distinct personality and there's a great gym and a decent restaurant.

Needless to say, it's a popular hotel for business travellers from North America but locals do drop in to visit the bar, attracted by amazing views. The location is handy if you want to explore Södermalm or Gamla Stan.
