This must be Stockholm’s most unusual hotel. Långholmen is a converted jail and has styled itself on the fact. You sleep in what was once a cell, with iron bars across the window and beds chained to the wall. Depressing, you might say, but the hotel is airy and entertaining and for novelty factor alone is worth at least a brief visit.
The gardens are also a treat: on a sunny day Långholmen takes on all the qualities of the countryside. If prison life has taken its toll and you don’t fancy staying here for meals, remember that you’re only minutes by taxi from Stockholm central.
Rooms are very reasonably priced, and with part of the hotel functioning as a youth hostel, tourists are in abundance. This should not put you off, as there is enough space for you to avoid too much contact with fellow holiday-makers.
