The least fancy of the Bengtsson family hotels, the Lord Nelson doesn’t live up to the Lady Hamilton or The Victory. Nestling between souvenir shops on a tourist thoroughfare the exterior is not particularly prepossessing, and is in fact more reminiscent of an English pub than a decent hotel. But this is all part of the old-fashioned, Gamla Stan package – inside, things are different.

One of the narrowest lobbies in Stockholm is full to overflowing, as with its sister hotels, with old models of ships, compasses and naval antiques. This theme is fervently maintained throughout the 29 rooms. These cabin-like constructions boast portholes and are named after famous ships. Rooftop decking offers respite from the slightly cramped interior, affording views over the ancient neighbourhood rooftops.

Reasonable rates for the Old Town and heaps of character make this cosy set-up an attractive prospect.
