The Victory Hotel is named after Horatio Nelson's flagship and has a degree more opulence than its two sibling properties, the Lord Nelson and the Lady Hamilton. The nautical knick-knacks remain at the Victory (including a letter written by Nelson in which he complains of seasickness), but here the rooms are named after Swedish sea captains and the suites are wildly opulent with huge four-poster beds and graceful sitting rooms in which Bang & Olufsen TVs and stereos sit alongside 17th-century elegance. There’s a mural on the ceiling of the Captain Johansson suite, which hasn't been altered since 1640.

If you find yourself unable to move far from such luxury, no problem: the Leijontornet restaurant downstairs is one of the finest in the city. The excellent wine cellar sits among the remains of Stockholm's fortification walls. This hotel offers sheer indulgence in the middle of Gamla Stan.
