Set in a trendy location in converted industrial buildings less than 10 minutes’ walk from the old town walls, this Italian venture exudes novelty and style. Resisting the temptation to play to medieval nostalgia, the minds behind the Ilmarine have created a spectacular split-level hotel. Creative, unique and a little surreal, this hotel is a lot of fun.
While the warehouse-sized atrium and dining area are full of experimental shapes and striking modern art, the bedrooms feel rustic and comfortable in tasteful blues and pines. Many of the rooms are built on two levels joined by a staircase, giving them the feel of a miniature house with its own sitting room, kitchen and upstairs bedroom, joined by one enormous Alice in Wonderland window.
The Deluxe Suite offers an extra bed for families with children. A tunnel is planned between the main hotel and the extension building, which is more restrained but just as comfortable. Ilmarine also rents out apartments, which can work out to be good value for larger groups.
