This imperial little guest house does not advertise, but instead depends on word of mouth to introduce customers to its tiny, beautifully located rooms, discreetly tucked away on the first floor of an old building constructed in the city wall.
Gloria is part of the same up-market business as the famous Gloria restaurant downstairs, together with wine cellar and tabacaleria – a tiny luxury complex favoured by wealthy ex-pats, racy Russians and Estonian bankers.
The six bedrooms have only been available since 2000 – although you wouldn’t guess it from their old-fashioned appearance, which ranges from chic to chintzy, with a slight hodge-podge of styles. Despite the exclusive feeling, prices are not too outrageous, but the rooms are small. Guests share a reception with the restaurant, which can be fun, but come and go via their own private stairway.
