  • BARS IN NEW YORK

  • There are a million and one ways to have fun in this city, but this is a Hedonist's guide, after all, and oftentimes that means imbibing like you really mean it  - so we thought, what makes for a truly satisfying night of drinking in New York? The specifics are as diverse as the people who come here, but there are a few general rules we like to follow. Intoxication, and the subsequent loss of inhibition (or bodily function, depending on who you are), calls for an environment in which you are comfortable and where you are surrounded by stimulating folk with whom you can cut loose without fear of reproach. If you love to howl at your friends' jokes, for example, don't go to the Burp Castle on East 7th Street, where it's all about the worshipful consumption of beer, and the decibel level is kept to a low hum by the staff. If you love the velvet rope scene and "getting in" really gets you off, don't be talked into Welcome to the Johnsons on Rivington Street.. You won't be happy and your vibe will be a real downer to the hipsters that flock there.

    • Choosing from the many places to drink in New York can be overwhelming for a newcomer looking for a quick tipple. Sweet simplicity rules the day at Laure Travers' amber-lit, unfussy Lower East Side watering hole on the precipice of Chinatown. French ex-pat Travers, who lives close by, sensed what the neighborhood lacked and gave it an inviting mahogany bar, fully stocked, with six taps and a brief, winning selection of wines on hand from France, Spain, and Argentina. Stimulating and spot-on in terms of lighting, staff, and décor, the bar's mission is simple: Pour the beers people love, craft great cocktails without ego, set a scene that encourages easy conversation, and try not to force the fun. (It comes without straining for it.) If you're an indie music fan, the soundtrack will suit you just right. May this sweet saloon live long and prosper.
